How does Celeon’s Smart Control work?

Celeon’s Smart Control has been designed to get the most out of the continuous price fluctuations on the power exchange. You can read more about the functioning of the power exchange in the article ‘Electricity market responsive device control’.
The next day’s exchange prices of electricity are added to Celeon’s system without any user intervention, after which the Smart Control algorithm will analyse the prices and draw up an hourly schedule, taking into account the settings specified by the user.
The system works either by switching the electrical device on and off (smart sockets / smart switches) or by raising and lowering the heating temperature (AiO device for air-to-air heat pumps). The objective is to schedule intensive consumption to more affordable hours and reduce consumption when prices are high.

The full benefit of our devices can be seen when used to control heating appliances or battery chargers. By heating in advance at more affordable hours, it is possible to avoid heating during expensive peak hours. Depending on the thermal accumulation capacity of the heating appliance, an X amount of hours of heating at peak hours can be excluded from the heating schedule. Batteries and electric vehicles can be charged in the same way. Such scheduling of consumption significantly reduces the average price of electricity consumed per day. From 2020 to 2022, we have helped our clients in the Estonian price area to save on average 25% of the electricity cost of the controlled (heating) appliance.

Smart Control system

The Smart Control system, which takes into account the price fluctuations on the power exchange, works by scheduling consumption to the most affordable hours and by excluding expensive hours.

When the next day’s electricity prices are received, the Smart Control system prepares a schedule based on the user’s settings, displaying the hours as follows:

Green columns – favourable hours. The controlled electrical device is switched on or the heating temperature is raised to the maximum level (in the case of an air-to-air heat pump);
Red columns – expensive hours. The controlled electrical device is switched off or the heating temperature is lowered to the minimum level (in the case of an air-to-air heat pump);
Grey columns – equal to red columns. The grey columns may be subject to change when the next electricity prices arrive. Grey columns cannot be manually changed.

The user can manually change the schedule by pressing EDIT to enter edit mode. The schedule can be changed by clicking on the respective columns. To exit edit mode, click Stop editing.

Grid fee calculation

If you would like the grid fee to be taken into account in schedule preparation, enter the prices according to your network package into our system (excluding VAT).

The daily rate of the grid fee is applied from 07:00 to 21:59 from Monday to Friday. The night rate of the grid fee is applied from 22:00 to 06:59 from Monday to Friday, and around the clock on weekends and public holidays.

Example
The user has set the daily rate of the grid fee to 5 cents per kWh and night rate to 4 cents per kWh. On Wednesday evening from 21:00 to 21:59, the exchange price of electricity is 6.5 cents per kWh, and 7 cents per kWh from 22:00 to 22:59. Although the electricity price is more affordable from 21:00 to 21:59, then with the grid fee taken into account, the later option (22:00–22:59) is actually more favourable:
Let’s look at the calculation for the 21:00–21:59 time slot: electricity price 6.5 cents/kWh + grid fee 5 cents/kWh = 11.5 cents/kWh (more expensive).
Now, let’s calculate the price for the 22:00–22:59 time slot: electricity price 7.0 cents/kWh + grid fee 4 cents/kWh = 11.0 cents/kWh (more affordable).

Price limit Smart Control mode

The simplest Smart Control mode is the price limit mode. With the price limit mode, the user can set their desired price limit: all prices below the limit will be considered favourable and those above it expensive.
Formula: grid fee + set price limit.
The daily rate is applied from 07:00 to 21:59 from Monday to Friday. The night rate is applied from 22:00 to 6:59 from Monday to Friday, and around the clock on weekends and public holidays.

Dynamic control Smart Control mode

Dynamic control mode is best suited for heating appliances as it takes into account that the heating appliance must work at certain intervals. The interval can be set by the user depending on the thermal inertia of their appliance.

Maximum consecutive expensive hours. This indicates the longest possible gap in the schedule in the case of expensive hours. This gap will not be exceeded. The system will choose the most favourable hour within the gap to break it.
Example
If the user wants the system to select one most affordable hour of the day, the rate of maximum consecutive expensive hours should be set to 46 hours as the most affordable hour of the first day may be at the beginning of the day (e.g. at 00:00), while the most affordable hour of the next day may be at the end of the day (e.g. at 23:00). As a result, the gap between two of the most affordable hours is 46 hours.

Minimum quantity of favourable prices per day If the gap specified in the previous setting is too long, it may be the case that not enough favourable hours per day are selected for the algorithm. With this setting, the user can set the minimum number of hours per day that will be considered favourable. The system, of course, will make sure to choose the most affordable hours.
NB! The system may select a higher number of favourable hours than specified in the settings.
Favourable prices. In addition to the above, the user can set a custom price limit: any hours below the price limit will also be considered favourable.
Formula: grid fee + set price.

Timers

Timers can be used to schedule switches by time of day and day of week. Please note that our smart control device for air-to-air heat pumps does not include the timer feature. To use the timer feature, Smart Control must be deactivated.

Devices with an electricity meter

Devices with an electricity meter display current electricity consumption (every 5 minutes), the amount of electricity consumed as well as the cost. The amount of electricity consumed is measured internally independently of the refresh interval of the consumption reading.
NB! The cost displayed does not include the grid fee or VAT!

Smart remote control device for air-to-air heat pumps

Celeon AiO is designed for controlling air-to-air heat pumps. The AiO comes equipped with the remote control and Smart Control features and allows for real-time monitoring of indoor climate (temperature and humidity). Thanks to remote control, the air-to-air heat pump can be controlled via the internet – allowing you, for example, to send commands to a heat pump in your second home.

Remote control of air-to-air heat pump

Unlike with our other devices where heating is adjusted by switching the device on or off, the Smart Control feature of the air-to-air heat pump works by lowering or raising the temperature of the device according to the user’s settings and prepared schedule (similarly to how the TEMP+, TEMP- commands work).

Minimum permissible temperature that Smart Control can set. During expensive hours, the heating temperature of the air-to-air heat pump will be lowered to this temperature.
Maximum permissible temperature that Smart Control can set. During favourable hours, the heating temperature of the air-to-air heat pump will be raised to this temperature.

Mini smart switch with electricity meter and temperature sensor

The smart switch is equipped with the remote control, Smart Control, and timer features. In addition, the device can be equipped with a temperature sensor that allows you to set the temperature range you want to be maintained similarly to how a thermostat works in heating appliances. This feature ensures that the temperature of the storage heater or heated room does not fall below the minimum temperature set, regardless of the price of electricity, and that no heating takes place above the maximum temperature. This device can also be used without the temperature sensor.
